The culture of fish consumption is not only about the diversity of the fish market. The product belongs to the category that has an impact on health, life expectancy, especially for older people and children. Since fish is a source of environmentally effective protein, essential amino acids, trace elements and omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids.

The ranking of countries in terms of per capita consumption of fish and seafood is headed by countries located within the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. According to FishStat, the top three fish consumers are Portugal, the Republic of Korea and Malaysia. Russia yields almost 2.5 times – more than 30 kg of fish consumption per person per year.

Our country has a huge potential for increasing fish consumption through aquaculture products, as well as cod fish species, which now form the basis of exports. A key place in the structure of consumption is occupied by: herring, pollock, mackerel, pink salmon, sprat and sardines. There is a great potential for growth in consumption of seafood and marine fish.

Today’s market of fish products is distinguished by both price and assortment diversity. The development level of fish consumption in Russia has remained consistently high over the past five years.

The key motivation for including fish in the diet is the health benefits, followed by taste, love for fish dishes. Women eat fish much more often than men because of its beneficial properties.

You can cook fish at home in a variety of ways, the most popular in our country is fried fish, then baked fish, fish soup, fish cakes. The most popular assortment positions among Russians are slightly salted fish, then cold-smoked and hot-smoked fish.

The fashion for healthy and low-calorie foods, as well as the growing popularity of Asian cuisine, are the main factors stimulating the consumption of seafood around the world and a growth point for the Russian fish market, especially the development of a fish consumption culture among young people.

The development of a culture of fish consumption requires more and more attention from the state – comprehensive measures (economic, social, informational) are needed to popularize fish consumption in our country, as is customary in other countries (Great Britain, Norway, Japan, USA, etc.) and increasing its accessibility to the population.
